MT FIELD - LAKE PEDDER

RUSSELL FALLS

Tasmania's best known falls, Russell Falls.  Just a short 10 minutes easy walk from the Mt Field National Park visitors centre.  These very pretty falls are a delight and a must visit when visiting Tasmania.  The path to the falls is sealed and suitable for wheelchairs.   The walk takes you past some of the tallest hardwood trees in the world.

Just inside the entrance to the park is the well appointed visitors centre.  There is a licensed cafe, take-away food, souvenirs and a fine  interpretation display as well as park rangers to assist with enquiries.   Free information sessions are provided.   There is a camping ground near the centre.   Accommodation including backpackers is available at the township of  National Park adjacent to the park entrance and Maydena a further 13 kilometres away.

A tourist train operates from New Norfolk to National Park (Russell Falls) once a month by the Derwent Valley Rail Society.  They were recently granted funds to upgrade the line.  They also operate a 1/2 hour a train ride twice monthly from New Norfolk along the very picturesque line.  One member of the society is restoring an old carriage as a restaurant.  Look for changes here and check train times.

The walk to Russell Falls commences just behind the centre as does the road to Lake Dobson.  The walk to the falls continues on to Horseshoe Falls.  Only about 15 minutes further on but a steep climb is involved.  The walk continues on to Lady Barron Falls  through a magnificent tall trees avenue - 2 hours round trip.  The track to Lady Barron Falls does cross the Lake Dobson road for those who can't make the climb up the hill.  1 hour return from here.  There are numerous great walks on Mt Field.  There are ski fields just a short but fairly steep 1/2 hour walk from Lake Dobson.  There is an excellent hour or so walk around Lake Dobson through Pandanis plants.

There is considerably more to come on this park as well as near by Lake Pedder.
