A
trip to Far North West can often be overlooked when visiting Tasmania.
Two or three nights here will prove very rewarding. Half day trips
include Rocky Cape National Park, Dip Falls and Water Wheel Creek, Stanley
and Circular Head, Woolnorth and Cape Grim, Dismal Swamp and the surf
beaches around Marrawah and Arthur River, the Milkshake Hills and the not to be missed
Allendale Gardens just south of Smithton.
Day trips or more can include:
The loop drive from Smithton through Marrawah, Arthur River, the coastal
walk from Sarah Anne Rocks to Couta Rocks (don't forget the camera) across
to Balfour, the Milkshake Hills, Trowutta Arch and back to Smithton via
Allendale Gardens.
The Western Explorer is also a great drive but does not make for an easy
return day trip. There is an excellent river cruise on the Huon Pine
lined Pieman River from Corinna. The spectacular Pieman Heads is well
worth the trip. High quality cabin accommodation is available. A
hotel has recently been constructed here.
From Corinna a river punt can be taken allowing a trip to Zeehan and Strahan
mostly on very good roads. Alternately, a trip north east through Savage
River and Waratah is recommended if wanting to head back to the North West
Coast or Cradle Mountain. Philosopher Falls is a classic Tarkine
rainforest walk near Waratah - a full day walk. Waratah itself is worth
exploring. A trip back to Burnie through the Helleyer Gorge is a
scenic alternative. Short walks at Wandle Falls and at the Hellyer
River. |
