WATERFALL VALLEY
Cradle
Mountain - Lake St Clair National
Park
|
The first overnight stop on the Overland
Track is at Waterfall Valley. There is a well equipped new hut about
a hundred metres from the original hut. The latter is in an idyllic
setting amongst pencil pines and scoparia with a blanket of deep green
moss covering the ground.
The descent into Waterfall
Valley hut
The walk in is about 3 1/2 hours on a dry
well constructed track. The walk can be taken in a day but as with
all walks beyond Dove Lake, precautions are required. The only difficult
section is the climb up to Marion's Lookout. The section is not that
long - about 15 minutes of a very steep section. An alternative is
to take the Horse Track past Crater Peak - no hard steep sections.
Superb views on either track. An hour or more is needed to explore
Waterfall Valley.

Two small creeks run through Waterfall Valley to
the east of the track. A labyrinth of tracks lead down to numerous very
picturesque waterfalls and cascades.
Looking back towards Cradle Mountain from
near the Barn Bluff track junction. 1/2 hour walk from the Valley. |
BARN BLUFF dominates the skyline to the west
on the first day of the Overland Track. Scoparia bush starting to
flower in the foreground.
