When driving south from Hobart
city a scenic suburban drive heads through Sandy Bay and continues to
follow the coast through Taroona to Kingston. There are several safe beaches
along the way.
At Taroona there is a Shot
Tower built in 1780. The tower is open to the public daily. There is a
stairway to the top where there are excellent views across the Derwent
River. There is a cafe and a gift shop. Visitor information on the
area is also available here.
See their facebook page for
current information.

Another 10 minutes drive will
take you to Kingston - Hobart's southern suburbs. From Kingston the main
highway continues on to Huonville.
Another minor road continues
through Blackman's Bay and follows the coast through Tinderbox and Howden.
Howden is a very popular
location of experiencing the
Aurora Australis - The Southern Lights.
From Howden the road joins the
Channel Highway just north of Margate. The Channel Highway continues
to follow the coast for a further 100 kilometres to Huonville.
