OCEAN BEACH
The West Coast
|
A few kilometres from Strahan
is sweeping Ocean Beach. At over 30 kilometres it is Tasmania's
longest. Each summer, the Short Tailed Sheerwater returns to South Eastern
Australia from the Bearing Sea in the Northern Hemisphere to mate.
They return to the same burrow. Ocean Beach is estimated to host
15,000 birds. A National Parks guide provides a very informative
information session on site at dusk for about an hour. (check current
times).
In the summer of 2005 the road
was very rough. |

The interesting aspect of this
site is one particular open sand dune which is covered in burrows.
Using a 'red' light the birds activities can be openly viewed. At
hatching time this is a very noisy and unique experience as all young hatch
on the same day! The birds spend the day at sea and return about an
hour after sunset.
