LEHNER'S RIDGE

The Blue Tier -North East Tasmania

Protruding from the south east corner of the Blue Tier is Lehners Ridge.  A narrow logging road passes along the ridge from Anchor Road near Halls Falls to the Lottah - Tasman Highway road.  It is easier to access the road from the north western end.  It is off to the right just a few minutes from the highway opposite a blue stone quarry.  The road is narrow and care needs to be taken.  There is a track off to the left which commences 2 kilometres along the road.  A track has been made by local volunteers past the biggest tree found in the north east - 19.5 metres at it's base!! The tree was only discovered in May 2002!

The Giant of the North East.  We had trouble getting back far enough to fit it in the picture!

An hour return from the start of the track.

This is Bridgett hugging out heritage - the North East Giant.  A very large Blackwood - bottom right.

The track passes alongside an old disused water race used during the mining era of the 1880's.

Wood turners visiting the area wanted to take the Blackwood (depicted above) one home.  A very large healthy Blackwood.  Just a few minutes from the start of the track.  The track is relatively easy.  It is just a little awkward when leaving the Groom River where it is a little steep and slippery.  The odd small leech.  Carry some salt.

The Lottah Road has some very interesting scenic and historical attractions.  We will return here.
