On the Tracks

We headed off to Cradle today hoping there would be some Deciduous Beech (Fagus) still about.  Luck was not with us but we caught up with some interesting people.  It was a perfectly sunny day on arrival with not a ripple on Dove Lake.

Perry and David from Melbourne.

Visitor from mainland Australia all asked the question why the weather was so good for this time of the year.  The perception is that Tasmania is cold, wet and wild.  It sure can be - but once a large high pressure system comes by the weather can be perfect.  From December through to late May the days are usually fine and clear.  By the time we caught up with Perry and David the clouds had rolled in.

The car park at Dove Lake was full by 9AM.  It will be far too small next season!  The good news is that the Dove Lake road has been sealed.  It is a credit to the road builders.  They have not left a mark.  You would not know they had been there.

Kara from Maine USA at Artist's Pool.

Kara has been in Tasmania attending the University of Tasmania for a semester as part of an Environmental Economics degree course.  We discussed Tasmania's environment.  She had just completed a paper on the flooding of Lake Pedder in the 1970's.

Jim and Vicki after conquering the short steep section up Hanson's Peak.

Jenny Richardson from Boat Harbour on the North West Coast provided us with pictures from Lake Cygnus on a trip to the South West.  I asked her advice as to when the Richea Scopario blooms in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park.  She replied "usually when you are not there".  Well the same could apply when visiting Dove Lake.  It can regularly be calm - usually when you are not there.
